Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and the seat of Maricopa County, located in the Sonoran Desert in the south-central part of the state. The city sits along the Salt River valley and serves as the core of the Phoenix metropolitan area, which also includes Tempe, Mesa, Scottsdale, and other surrounding communities.

Schools
Because Phoenix grew through annexation, it is served by numerous separate school districts rather than a single system. These include Phoenix Elementary School District #1, Phoenix Union High School District, Washington Elementary School District, Alhambra Elementary District, Cartwright Elementary District, Pendergast Elementary School District, Madison Elementary School District, Osborn Elementary District, and Deer Valley Unified School District, among others, with some small portions of the city not falling within any district. Elementary districts generally serve grades through 8th grade and feed into separate high school districts such as Phoenix Union High School District. Addresses can be checked against district boundary maps, including U.S. Census Bureau school district maps, to confirm which district and schools serve a specific property.
Getting around
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is centrally located about 3 miles from downtown and handles roughly 1,200 daily flights to more than 120 destinations, with the free PHX Sky Train running 24 hours a day connecting both terminals to the Rental Car Center and the 44th St/Washington Valley Metro Rail station. Valley Metro Rail operates two light rail lines, the A Line and B Line, covering 38.5 miles of track across Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, with 50 stations in the system. The rail system connects central Phoenix with Tempe, Mesa, and Arizona State University, and transfers to the airport are made at the 44th St/Washington station via the Sky Train. Valley Metro also operates a regional bus network alongside the rail and streetcar lines.
